Crafting Geometry: Abstract Art from South and West Asia
Curated by Murtaza Vali
Sotheby’s, NY, 2020
This hand-drawn octagon, 89.6 cm in diameter, was created for the group exhibition "Crafting Geometry: Abstract Art from South and West Asia" at Sotheby's, New York in 2020. I was honored to exhibit alongside so many abstract artists whose practices I admire, so I wanted to make a work that was worthy of the company and explored the depths of geometric expression.
This was the most intense artwork I had drawn to date, with 6,048 lines in 64 directional layers. I used 10 ink colors that would meet at the edges and in the center, but would intersect infinitely along the way to create dark, rhythmic textures and novel, emergent patterns.
