‘1, 2, 3’ - Solo Show

Series 1 was one of three series of works that I presented in my first solo exhibition, ‘1,2,3’ in 2018. Series 1 is comprised of 16 individual works where each work is 16 inches by 16 inches, and is built on an intricate square grid of 1/16th inch. The repetition of the number 16 was deliberate and intended to draw on phenomena generated by fractals, symmetry and a 16-part gradient. Drawn with a 0.2 mm black pen on white paper, I wanted to attempt to build something grand from countless, meticulous elements. Each of these pieces is built up from around 10,000 precisely placed 1-inch lines. Each work is a one-step progression from the previous piece. In the first piece, the complexity of the grids begins on the edges and moves more towards the center with each work, ultimately building to an apex in the center of the final piece. When the works are placed together, the series becomes a sixteen-step progression that ‘breathes’ in and out as the complexities converge and disperse.
