Pigment Paint on Linen
65” x 33” (165.1 cm x 83.82 cm)
This is my first painted work and the largest piece I have created to date. For the past few years, I have been working almost exclusively with technical ink pens on archival paper. While that medium allowed me to thoroughly explore and learn the intricacies of my geometric structures, I was also growing eager to add a deeper dimension and larger scale to my work. In the fall of 2020, having just completed the eleven artworks in Series 8, and with the pandemic lockdown freeing up plenty of time for a new exploration, I decided to finally experiment with making a painted work.
Using pigment paint on ultra fine Belgian linen, I painted 16,384 pixels in 16 colors, according to a predetermined coded pattern. I had envisioned this pattern to emerge from a polychromatic burst at its central horizon and interweave as it moved vertically outwards. On top of this base layer, I drew thousands of painted lines with the same rhythmic vibrations I had been employing in my earlier pieces on paper. These black lines, each only 0.7mm in width, intersect and combine to add an undulating, living texture to the work and a visual feel more akin to woven fabric. This piece marks the start of a new stage in my practice with a broader array of tools and an expanded depth of possibility.
This work took approximately 2 ½ months to complete.
